As the second oldest town in Texas, Bastrop’s historical roots run deep.  Bastrop was established in 1832, and today, downtown Bastrop represents a unique blending of the old and new.  Founded on the banks of the Colorado River, the historic district is filled with a variety of shops and restaurants, providing a picture-perfect vision of small-town charm and historical ambiance.  The nearby neighborhoods contain more than 130 homes with historic markers and/or medallions and can be found in the National Register of Historic Places. 

Historic downtown continues to prosper with unique shops and dining, and just around the corner, along the corridor of State Highway 71, businesses are flourishing.  Over 37,000 vehicles per day travel down Hwy 71 and that number is projected to increase by 22,000 by 2010.  Bastrop is welcoming new businesses like Lowe’s, Best Buy and PETCO, with others to come and the economic boom is projected to continue for many years to come.
